01Why It Matters

A Blower Line Without a PRV Is a Risk

A positive-displacement blower does not know the line is blocked. It keeps pushing air, and if the outlet is throttled, valved shut or clogged, pressure climbs until something fails — the motor overloads, a joint blows, a vessel ruptures. The YBPRV pressure relief valve is the device that stops that happening: it opens at a set pressure and vents the surplus air safely to atmosphere.

This is safety-critical hardware, not an accessory. Every blower and pressurised air line should have a correctly set relief valve as its last line of defence. Four YBPRV models cover a 0–600 mbar set-point range with connections from 32 mm to 100 mm, all in a stainless build that stays free and reliable in the field.

02Working Principle

Spring, Set Point, Vent

The mechanism is deliberately simple, because simple is reliable. A calibrated springholds a poppet closed against its seat. In normal running, line pressure is below the spring’s set point and the valve stays shut — no leak, no loss.

When something downstream restricts the flow and pressure rises above the set point, the air force overcomes the spring, the poppet lifts off its seat, and the valve vents the excess to atmosphere. Pressure falls, the spring re-seats the poppet, and the line returns to normal — all automatically, with no power and no operator. That mechanical certainty is exactly what a safety device must have.

Set it right

The set point sits in a window: above your normal working pressure, so the valve does not chatter and leak in ordinary operation, and below the safe limit of the blower and pipework, so it acts before anything is damaged. Choosing that window correctly is the essence of specifying a relief valve.

Sizing the relief, not just the set point

A relief valve has to do more than open at the right pressure — it has to flow enough airto actually cap the rise. If the valve is too small for the blower’s output, pressure keeps climbing even with the valve wide open. So match the connection to the blower’s capacity: the YBPRV range runs 32, 50, 65 and 100 mm precisely so the valve can pass what the blower pushes. Size the connection to the line and the blower duty, not just to a convenient fitting.

Treat the PRV as the last line of defence, not the first. Good practice is to prevent the over-pressure where you can — avoid dead-heading the blower, interlock isolation valves — and let the relief valve stand behind that as the mechanical safeguard that acts no matter what else fails. Fit it, set it correctly, keep it stainless, and test it: a safety device earns its place only when it is proven to work.

Stainless Build for the Long Term

A relief valve only earns its place if it still works years after it was fitted — and the way it fails is by seizing. A seized-shut valve gives false confidence and offers no protection at all. That is why the YBPRV is stainless-built.

Installation

  • Fit on the pressure line close to the blower outlet, upstream of any valve that could isolate it — the PRV must always see line pressure.
  • Match the connection to the line size and mount so the vent path is clear and directed safely away from people.
  • Never plug, throttle or valve-off the relief — that defeats the entire purpose.
  • Confirm the set point suits your working pressure and the safe limit of the system.

Maintenance

  • Periodically verify the valve is free and lifts at its set point — test it, do not assume it.
  • Keep the vent clear of dirt, paint and obstruction.
  • Inspect after any incident in which the valve actually relieved.

A Relief Valve Must Be Proven, Not Assumed

The dangerous failure of a relief valve is the silent one — a valve that has quietly seized shut still looks fine. Test it; do not trust it on appearance.

  • Chatters or leaks in normal running — the set point is too close to your working pressure. Raise the set point or reselect a model with the right range.
  • Does not lift when it should — the valve is seized from corrosion or paint, or the vent is plugged. Free it, keep the vent clear, specify the stainless build, and test at the set point regularly.
  • Weeps at the seat after relieving — debris on the seat or a worn seat is stopping a clean re-seat. Clean or replace.
  • Vents too early — set-point drift or the wrong model for the duty. Verify the set point and reselect if needed.
  • Never relieves at all — an upstream valve is isolating it from line pressure. Relocate the PRV so it always sees the blower line.

Why does every blower line need a pressure relief valve?
Because a positive-displacement blower keeps pushing air even when the line downstream is blocked or throttled — and pressure then climbs until something gives. A pressure relief valve (PRV) is the safety device that opens at a set point and vents the excess, protecting the blower motor from overload, the pipework and vessels from rupture, and the process from a dangerous over-pressure. It is not optional hardware; it is the safeguard that stops a blocked line from becoming a failure.
How does the PRV work?
A spring holds the valve poppet closed against normal line pressure. When pressure rises above the spring set point — because a valve closed, a filter clogged or a line blocked — the force lifts the poppet off its seat and the valve vents the surplus air to atmosphere. As pressure falls back below the set point, the spring re-seats the poppet. It is automatic, mechanical and needs no power.
How do I set and select the relief pressure?

Stainless steel resists corrosion from moisture, process vapours and outdoor exposure, so the valve stays free and reliable over years — a relief valve that has seized shut is worse than no valve at all, because it gives false confidence. Stainless keeps the moving parts working when you need them, which on a safety device is the whole point.
Does the PRV need maintenance?
Very little, but do not ignore it. Periodically check that the valve is free and lifts at its set point, keep the vent path clear, and make sure nothing has been done to defeat or plug it. A relief valve is a safety device — verify it works rather than assuming it does.
