01Overview

One Pump, Vacuum and Pressure, All Shift

The YELV / YELVD vacuum pumpis Yash Blowers’ duty-cycle workhorse — the pump you fit when a machine has to run every shift, every day, and cannot afford to stop. It delivers a steady 600 mm/Hg of vacuum on the suction side and up to 12 psi of pressure on the discharge side, so a single motor covers both air services a production line typically needs.

Seven models span 8 to 72 m³/hr and 0.5 to 5 HP, in two drive layouts: compact direct-drive YELVD units for tight footprints, and belt-driven YELV units for cooler running and higher airflow. Whichever you choose, the duty rating is the same — you are selecting a mechanical layout to suit your machine, not compromising on performance.

The workhorse brief

This family leads in the printing and paper industries. On a mini-offset or offset press it lifts, separates and registers sheets on the feeder with vacuum, then floats and delivers them with low-pressure air — from one pump. The same qualities that make it good for print — continuous duty, dual air service, simple field maintenance — make it a dependable choice across packaging, converting, labelling and general factory vacuum.

02Working Principle

Vacuum on One Side, Pressure on the Other

The pump moves a fixed volume of air with every revolution. At the inlet it creates suction as it draws that air in — that is your vacuum. It then compresses the air and pushes it out of the outlet — that is your pressure. The two are two ends of the same air path, which is why one machine can serve a vacuum manifold and a blow-air manifold simultaneously.

Belt drive vs direct drive

A direct-drive (YELVD) pump couples the motor shaft straight to the pump. Fewer parts, nothing to tension, a small footprint — ideal where space is tight and the duty is moderate.

A belt-drive (YELV) pump runs the pump on a pulley slower than the motor. Turning slower means cooler running and less wear at high airflow, and the belt acts as a shock path that protects both motor and pump. Change the pulley ratio and you re-tune airflow in the field. For the larger, harder-working models, belt drive is the long-life choice.

Duty cycle is the real spec

Any pump can hit a number on a test bench for a minute. A workhorse has to hold it for ten thousand hours. That is why we rate the YELV/YELVD for continuous duty and build in the margins — generous bearings, a real cooling path, and a filter you can actually reach — that let it do the same job on year five as on day one.

03Lead Applications

Printing & the Paper Industry

Print and paper are where this pump proves itself. The demands are exact and unforgiving: a dropped or mis-registered sheet is scrap, and a stalled feeder stops the whole line.

  • Mini-offset & offset presses — sheet pickup, separation, registration (vacuum) and sheet float / delivery (pressure).
  • Paper folding & cutting machines — hold-down and feed control.
  • Paper converting & UV coating — web and sheet handling.
  • Screen & label printing — vacuum beds and take-off.
  • Packaging & carton lines — pick-and-place, erecting and sealing.

Because the pump supplies both air services, an OEM can build a simpler, cheaper machine around a single Yash unit — and a print shop can standardise on one spare across a fleet of presses.

05Construction

Materials & Build

  • Pump body: cast iron, machined for a true bore and long element life.
  • Rotor: balanced steel rotor for smooth, low-vibration running — the small models sit at just 60 dB.
  • Bearings: heavy-duty, generously sized for continuous duty and belt side-load on YELV models.
  • Drive: V-belt and matched pulleys (YELV) or a direct coupling (YELVD); both on a common rigid base.
  • Motor: TEFC induction, wound for your supply, 0.5–5 HP across the range.
  • Inlet protection: designed to take a YEBL-FA suction filter — essential in dusty paper environments.

Everything that wears — belt, filter, bearings, element — is a stock, field-replaceable item. A press-room fitter keeps the line running without a service call.

06Install & Maintain

Installation & Maintenance

Installation

  • Bolt to a flat, rigid base; leave room around the pump for cooling airflow and filter access.
  • Fit a YEBL-FA suction filter at the inlet — paper dust is abrasive and will shorten element life if ingested.
  • On YELV belt models, set belt tension and check pulley alignment; a slack or misaligned belt wastes power and wears fast.
  • Keep suction and pressure hoses full-bore and short; plumb vacuum and pressure manifolds separately.
  • Confirm motor rotation direction before loading the machine.

Maintenance schedule

  • Daily / shift: glance at the inlet filter; clear paper dust build-up.
  • Weekly: check belt tension and condition on YELV models; listen for bearing noise.
  • Monthly: clean or replace the filter element; verify vacuum against 600 mm/Hg.
  • Annually: inspect bearings and coupling; replace the belt as preventive maintenance on hard-run presses.

Keeping the Feeder Fed

On a running press, most vacuum faults are quick fixes at the pump — not pump failures. Check these first.

  • Vacuum has dropped on the feeder — the suction filter is the usual culprit in a dusty press room; then look for a leaking hose or fitting, and on YELV models a slack belt. Clean the filter, seal the hoses, re-tension the belt.
  • Sheets mis-registering or not lifting — the pump is not making enough vacuum for the stations connected. Clear the filter; if you have added stations, the pump may now be undersized — step up a model.
  • Belt squeal or rapid belt wear (YELV) — pulleys are misaligned or the belt is slack. Realign and re-tension; replace a glazed belt.
  • Pump running hot — a blocked filter or cooling path, or duty above rating. Clean, ventilate, and check the ambient is below 40 °C.
  • No air at the delivery / blow side — the discharge line is blocked, kinked or leaking. Trace and clear it.

07Applications

Beyond the Press Room

  • Packaging & labelling — vacuum pickup, hold and sealing.
  • Woodworking & CNC — vacuum clamping of sheet stock.
  • Thermoforming & blister packing — forming vacuum and part release.
  • General factory vacuum — bench stations, jigs and fixtures.
  • Pneumatic feeding — using the discharge pressure for air knives and blow-off.

10Frequently Asked Questions

Answers for Specifiers & Buyers

What is the difference between the YELV and YELVD vacuum pumps?
Both reach the same 600 mm/Hg vacuum and up to 12 psi pressure; the difference is the drive. YELVD models are direct-driven — the motor couples straight to the pump shaft for a compact, low-maintenance package ideal for tight machine footprints. YELV models are belt-driven, which lets the pump turn slower than the motor for cooler running, higher airflow and easy field changes by swapping pulleys. Choose direct drive for space, belt drive for continuous heavy airflow.
Why is this pump popular for offset and mini-offset printing?
Printing presses need a pump that supplies both vacuum (to lift and register sheets on the feeder) and low pressure (to float and deliver them) — and that runs all shift without complaint. The YELV/YELVD does both from one unit at up to 600 mm/Hg vacuum and 10–12 psi pressure, and it is built for continuous duty. That combination is why it is a standard fit on offset, mini-offset, folding and paper-converting machines.
Can one pump really give vacuum and pressure at the same time?
Yes. The pump draws air through its inlet (vacuum) and discharges it through its outlet (pressure). On printing and packaging machines the suction side holds and registers the sheet while the discharge side is used for sheet float and air-blow delivery — one motor, two useful air services.
How do I size a vacuum pump for continuous 24/7 duty?
Work out the total airflow your machine's suction cups, bars and blow nozzles consume at the required vacuum, add margin for hose losses and wear, and pick the model whose m³/hr covers it. The range spans YELVD-134 at 8 m³/hr (0.5 HP) to YELV-1200 at 72 m³/hr (5 HP). For round-the-clock running, size with headroom and keep ambient below 40 °C so the pump is never at its limit.
What maintenance does the YELV/YELVD need?
Keep the inlet filter clean, check belt tension and alignment on belt-driven models, and service the pump element per the manual. A blocked suction filter is the most common cause of lost vacuum and overheating, so fit a YEBL-FA air filter and clean it on a schedule. Belt models are simple to maintain in the field — replace a worn belt in minutes.
Do you supply for 60 Hz export markets?
Yes. We wind motors for 50 Hz or 60 Hz and 220–440 V, export-pack in fumigated crates, and ship under HS code 8414 with full documentation. Quote us your voltage, frequency and destination port for FOB, CIF or EXW pricing within 24 hours.
