Why a Pressure Relief Valve Is Mandatory

A side-channel blower cannot throttle itself. If the discharge is blocked — a closed valve, a fouled diffuser, a frozen line — the blower keeps trying to push against a wall, the pressure spikes past its rating, the motor overloads, and the air inside the machine turns to heat. A pressure relief valve (PRV) is the mechanical backstop that vents that excess before it destroys the blower. On any blower with a valve, diffuser, or restriction downstream, a PRV is not optional. This post explains why, and how to set one.

What happens without a relief valve

Two failure modes, both expensive:

  • Over-pressure (dead-head). Discharge blocked. The blower pushes past its rated pressure, the impeller does work that goes nowhere but heat, internal air temperature climbs fast, the motor draws over full-load current, and the overload trips — or, without one, the winding cooks. The impeller and bearings suffer from the heat too.
  • Over-vacuum (starved inlet). Inlet blocked — a clogged filter or a shut suction valve. The blower pulls a deeper vacuum than rated, again overloading and overheating.

A blower is a fixed-displacement machine on a steep pressure curve. It has no natural relief. The PRV supplies it.

Setpoint logic: 10-15% above operating

The rule is simple and it is where most installations go wrong:

Set the PRV 10-15% above the maximum continuous operating pressure, and always below the blower's rated maximum.

  • Too low → the valve bleeds air continuously at normal duty, wasting energy and starving the process.
  • Too high → the valve never lifts in time to protect the motor.
  • Above the blower rating → the machine is already over-pressured before the valve acts. Pointless.

Worked setpoint

A YEBL-1-400 runs a normal duty of 260 mbar and is rated to 330 mbar.

  • Setpoint = 260 × 1.10 to 1.15 = 286 to 299 mbar
  • That sits safely below the 330 mbar rating and above normal duty.
  • The YBPRV-200, adjustable 0-300 mbar, covers it exactly.
  • In PSI (if your gauge reads PSI): 290 mbar × 0.0145038 = 4.2 PSI.

Match the valve to the blower

For high-pressure two-stage blowers like the YEBL-HP-DS-120 (820 mbar) or YEBL-HP-TS-175 (1040 mbar), the operating pressure exceeds the 0-300 mbar valves, so you move to the YBPRV-400 range and match connection size to the larger bore. Confirm the setpoint against the blower rating using the pressure conversion guide.

Installing and commissioning the PRV

  1. Mount on the discharge header, close to the blower, before any downstream isolation valve — so it protects even when a valve is shut.
  2. Point the vent safely away from operators; discharged air can be hot.
  3. Set the pressure with the adjustment against a calibrated gauge at the operating point.
  4. Test the lift. Momentarily throttle the discharge and confirm the valve opens near the setpoint and reseats when pressure drops.
  5. Recheck seasonally. Springs relax; a valve set once and forgotten drifts. Add it to your periodic checks.

The PRV is a backstop, not a control

A relief valve protects against fault conditions; it is not a way to regulate process pressure day to day. If you find the PRV lifting during normal running, the blower is oversized for the duty or the system pressure is wrong — fix that rather than relying on the valve to bleed the excess. Where the PRV sits in the piping

A relief valve only protects what is upstream of it. Get the position wrong and it protects nothing:

  • On the discharge header, close to the blower. The whole point is to relieve blower pressure, so it must see that pressure directly.
  • Before any downstream isolation or control valve. If an operator shuts a valve, the blower dead-heads against it — and the PRV must be between the blower and that valve to vent the trapped pressure. A PRV mounted after the isolation valve is useless the moment the valve closes, which is exactly the scenario it exists for.
  • Vent routed to a safe place. Relieved air is warm and moves fast; point it away from people and away from the intake (re-ingesting hot air raises running temperature).

Vacuum duty needs relief too

The relief-valve logic is not only about pressure. A blower or pump on vacuum duty can be starved — a clogged inlet filter or a shut suction valve — and pull a deeper vacuum than rated, overloading and overheating just as a blocked discharge does. A vacuum relief valve admits air to cap the vacuum at a safe level. The same 10-15% margin idea applies, referenced to the rated vacuum instead of pressure.

For a machine that runs pressure one moment and vacuum the next (a pressure/vacuum mode duty), protect both ports. The failure modes are mirror images and both cook the motor — see motor burnout prevention.

A quick commissioning story

The classic field failure: a new install runs fine for weeks, then a downstream valve is closed for maintenance without stopping the blower. With no PRV, the blower dead-heads, current spikes, and within minutes the overload trips — or, if the overload is mis-set, the winding cooks. With a correctly set YBPRV in the right position, the valve simply lifts, vents the excess, and the blower idles safely against it until someone notices.
