The pressure-led nature of cement air duties
Water and sewage aeration is a volume game at low pressure. Cement is the opposite: the powder resists flow, the pipe runs are long, and silos hold a tall column of material. That pushes the duty into the medium- and high-pressure band. Pick a blower on volume alone and it will stall the moment it meets a loaded conveying line.

Silo fluidisation and blending
Cement does not want to flow out of a silo on its own — it bridges and rat-holes. Fluidising pads in the silo floor inject low-to-medium-pressure air that loosens the powder so it discharges cleanly. Blending silos use the same idea at larger scale to homogenise raw meal. Sizing checklist for cement duties
- Fix the pressure first. Conveying distance, silo height and material density set the pressure. This is the number that eliminates undersized machines.
- Add the volume the process needs, then margin for pipe and valve losses.
- Confirm continuous duty. Cement runs 24/7; the blower must hold its point without heat-soaking. Check the sound and thermal ratings for round-the-clock service.
- Protect against abrasion. Fine powder is abrasive. Keep the blower on the clean side of the process where possible, and filter any room-air intake with a proper inlet filter.
- Be honest about the ceiling. If the pressure demand exceeds what a regenerative or centrifugal blower holds, specify a positive-displacement machine instead of over-driving the wrong tool.
Environment and reliability
Cement plants are hot, dusty and unforgiving. Mount blowers where cooling air is clean, keep intakes away from the dustiest zones, and plan spares — a stalled conveying blower stops the line. On critical transfers, a duty/standby pair is cheap insurance against downtime.

Why cement is a pressure problem, not a volume problem
The mental shift that gets cement air selection right is this: the pressure has to be there before the air can do anything useful. A conveying line full of powder presents a back-pressure the blower must overcome before a single kilogram moves. If the machine cannot hold that pressure, no amount of extra volume helps — it just stalls. This is the opposite of a plain ventilation fan, where volume is king and pressure is an afterthought.
That is also why the crossover to positive-displacement machines is a pressure crossover. Regenerative and centrifugal blowers hold pressure well up to a point; past it, only a roots or screw machine keeps pushing against a loaded line without losing flow.

Abrasion and continuous-duty survival
Cement powder is abrasive and the plant runs continuously, so machine survival is as important as the duty point:
- Keep the blower on the clean side. Where the layout allows, put the blower upstream of the material pickup so it pushes clean air, not powder, through the impeller.
- Filter every room-air intake. A quality inlet filter is mandatory in a dusty plant — abrasive fines through an impeller shorten its life fast.
- Size for 24/7 thermal load. A blower held near its pressure limit around the clock heat-soaks; leave margin so it is not permanently at the edge of its curve.
