Vacuum Pumps for Packaging Machines

Packaging machines use vacuum to pull air out of a pack before sealing, to form film over a mould, and to pick and place product. The pump you need is set by how deep you must evacuate, how fast each cycle must finish, and — critically for food — whether oil can touch the airstream. For hygienic food and pharma packing the oil-free YBDVP dry pumps are the default; for thermoforming that also needs blow air, the combined YBVP pumps do both jobs.

The three vacuum jobs on a packaging line

Different machines lean on vacuum differently:

  • Chamber and tray-seal vacuum packing. Air is evacuated from the pack or chamber to a target vacuum, then the pack is sealed and (often) gas-flushed. The pump has to hit the target vacuum within the cycle time.
  • Thermoforming. Vacuum draws heated film down onto a mould to form the pack cavity; some machines also use pressure air to help form and to release. That combined need is what the YBVP vacuum-and-pressure pumps are built for. Forming-specific sizing is in vacuum forming pump selection.
  • Pick-and-place / labelling / filling hold-down. Vacuum cups grip product and packs; the demand is continuous leakage flow rather than a deep pull.

Sizing: evacuation time is the number that matters

For chamber and tray-seal machines the governing spec is evacuation time — how long the pump takes to pull the pack volume from atmosphere down to the target vacuum. It depends on three things:

  1. Volume to evacuate — the pack or chamber, plus hose and manifold.
  2. Target vacuum — a light gas-flush pack needs less depth than a hard vacuum pack.
  3. Pump speed at that vacuum — and here is the trap: pumping speed derates as the pump pulls deeper. The free-air number is not the speed you get near the target.

So you size on the flow at your operating vacuum, with margin, so the pump finishes the pull inside the cycle without running permanently at its ultimate. The full arithmetic — free-air vs operating speed, cycle-rate multiplication — is in choosing a vacuum pump by CFM and vacuum level.

Cycle rate multiplies demand

A machine indexing 20 packs a minute asks the pump to complete 20 evacuations a minute. If each pull needs a certain average flow, the continuous duty is that flow held all shift. Under-size and the cycle time stretches, throughput drops and you never hit your rated packs-per-minute. Always size for the fastest cycle the line will run, not the average.

Dry or oil? Food decides it

For anything food-contact or pharma, the airstream must be clean. An oil-sealed pump risks oil mist reaching the product side — a contamination liability you cannot audit away. The oil-free YBDVP dry series removes the question: no oil, nothing to migrate, nothing to change on a schedule.

The −850 mbar ultimate (about 163 mbar absolute) is deep enough for tray-seal, chamber vacuum packing and MAP. Where oil is acceptable and you want a cheaper deep pull — non-food industrial packing — the ACME high-vacuum pumps at 750 mmHg are an option. Gas flush, MAP and why depth targets vary

Not every pack is pulled to the same vacuum, and matching the pump to the pack style saves both energy and product.

  • Hard vacuum packing (vac-pack meat, cheese, engineering parts) pulls deep to remove as much air as possible before sealing. This is the duty that most needs the YBDVP dry pumps' −850 mbar depth.
  • Modified atmosphere packing (MAP) evacuates the pack, then back-fills with a protective gas mix before sealing. The evacuation is often lighter than a hard vac-pack, but the cycle rate is high, so the pump is sized more on throughput than on depth.
  • Gas-flush without full evacuation displaces air with gas rather than pulling a deep vacuum — the lightest vacuum duty of the three.

The lesson: the pack style sets the vacuum target, and the vacuum target plus cycle rate sets the pump. A line switching between hard-vac and MAP should be sized for the deepest, fastest duty it will run, then it comfortably covers the lighter ones.

Leak-back and seal integrity

A pack that reaches the target vacuum but then loses it before sealing is a seal or valve problem, not a pump problem — but an undersized pump masks it by never quite reaching target in the first place. Size the pump with margin so the pack hits its vacuum with time to spare inside the cycle; that headroom is also what lets the line hold rate as filters load and cups wear. If evacuation time creeps up over weeks, suspect a loading inlet filter or (on oil units) tired oil before blaming the pump itself.

Practical notes that save pumps

  • Add a knock-out / catchpot if the pack can carry liquid or powder toward the pump. Debris and liquid in the bore is the fastest way to wreck any vacuum pump.
  • Size the hose and manifold generously. A pump throttled by an undersized hose evacuates slowly no matter how good it is — the restriction, not the pump, sets the cycle time.
  • Filter the inlet. Product dust and film fragments score vanes.
  • Plan the vane interval on dry pumps — the self-lubricating vanes are consumables; see vane inspection and replacement.

Summary

Size a packaging vacuum pump on evacuation time at your target vacuum, multiplied up by the fastest cycle rate, with margin — never on the free-air number alone. For food and pharma the airstream must be clean, so the oil-free YBDVP dry pumps are the default; thermoformers that need blow air as well are served by the combined YBVP pumps; non-food industrial packing where oil is fine can use the cheaper ACME high-vacuum pumps.
