mbar to PSI Conversion for Blowers & Vacuum

To convert millibar to PSI, multiply by 0.0145038. To go from PSI to mbar, multiply by 68.9476. So a blower rated 300 mbar develops 4.35 PSI, and a 6 PSI process spec needs 413.7 mbar of blower pressure. Side-channel blowers are almost always rated in mbar; the machine that consumes their air is often specified in PSI. That mismatch is where sizing errors and burnt-out motors start.

The exact pressure factors

Pressure is force per area, so unit conversion is exact — no gas assumptions. Anchor everything to the pascal (SI):

  • 1 mbar = 100 Pa (hectopascal)
  • 1 PSI = 6894.76 Pa
  • Therefore 1 mbar = 100 ÷ 6894.76 = 0.0145038 PSI
  • And 1 PSI = 68.9476 mbar

The /tools/unit-converter handles all of these, but 0.0145 (mbar→PSI) and 68.95 (PSI→mbar) are worth memorising.

The "×0.0145" shortcut and its error

Using 0.0145 instead of 0.0145038 understates PSI by 0.026% — negligible. What is not negligible is confusing gauge and absolute pressure, or mixing pressure with vacuum sign convention. Blower pressure ratings are gauge (above atmosphere). Vacuum ratings are gauge below atmosphere, printed as a negative mbar. Never add a vacuum figure to a pressure figure without resolving the sign first.

Worked examples on real Yash models

Yash side-channel blowers print pressure in mbar. Here is what each rating is in PSI:

Note the ceiling: even the two-stage YEBL-HP-TS-175 tops out near 15 PSI. Side-channel blowers are low-pressure, high-flow machines. If a process genuinely needs 20+ PSI continuous, it needs a compressor, not a blower — a distinction that gets lost when someone reads "1040 mbar" and assumes it is comparable to a shop-air line.

Reverse example: a PSI spec meets a mbar machine

A vacuum-forming line calls for 7 PSI of blowing pressure. Convert:

  • 7 PSI × 68.9476 = 482.6 mbar

That rules out every single-stage Yash model (all under 460 mbar in this class) and points at the high-pressure two-stage series. Convert first, then shortlist — never eyeball "300-something mbar should be fine."

Vacuum: mbar, mmHg, and the sign convention

Vacuum ratings need three units to stay unambiguous:

  • mbar (absolute or gauge) — Yash side-channel vacuum is quoted as gauge, e.g. −300 mbar.
  • mmHg / Torr — common on oil-sealed and rotary-vane pumps.
  • % vacuum — sometimes seen; 100% would be perfect vacuum, never achieved.

Key relations at sea level (atmosphere ≈ 1013 mbar ≈ 760 mmHg):

Where the unit matters most: the relief valve setpoint

Pressure conversion is not academic when you set a pressure relief valve (PRV). The rule of thumb is to set the PRV 10–15% above the maximum continuous operating pressure, never above the blower's rated ceiling.

Worked example: a YEBL-1-400 runs a duty of 260 mbar.

  • Setpoint = 260 × 1.10 to 1.15 = 286 to 299 mbar
  • The YBPRV-200 is adjustable across 0–300 mbar, so it covers this exactly.
  • In PSI that setpoint is 286 × 0.0145038 = 4.15 PSI — useful if your gauge reads PSI.

Set it too high and the valve never protects the motor; set it below the operating point and it dumps air continuously. Getting from your gauge's unit to the valve's unit correctly is the whole game. The why a PRV is mandatory post covers the logic in full.

mmH₂O and the aeration depth trap

The most misused pressure unit in blower work is millimetres of water column (mmH₂O), because diffused-aeration and STP contractors think in water depth, not mbar. The relation:

  • 1 mbar = 10.197 mmH₂O (so 100 mbar ≈ 1 metre of water)
  • 1 m of water column ≈ 98.07 mbar

This matters because a diffuser sitting under water has to be fed at a pressure that overcomes the water depth above it, plus the diffuser's own resistance, plus the pipe losses. A diffuser at 4 m depth needs at least 4 × 98.07 = 392 mbar just to push bubbles out — before you add anything else.

Read a spec as "4 m depth" and you now know the blower must beat ~392 mbar static, which already exceeds every single-stage Yash model's ceiling and points at the two-stage or high-pressure range. Convert depth to pressure first; never assume a blower rated "330 mbar" will feed a 4 m tank. The piping design guide adds the rest of the system loss on top.

Gauge vs absolute, worked once more

A vacuum-forming spec quotes "−600 mbar." Is that gauge (600 below atmosphere) or absolute (600 mbar remaining)? At sea level:

  • −600 mbar gauge = 413 mbar absolute — a moderate vacuum, within side-channel reach.
  • 600 mbar absolute = −413 mbar gauge — a shallower vacuum.

These are different duties. Yash side-channel vacuum ratings are gauge; deep oil-sealed pump ratings are absolute. When a datasheet does not say, ask before you convert — the sign and basis change which machine you need.
