The inlet filter is the cheapest part on a blower and the one that protects everything expensive. A side-channel blower's impeller runs at close clearance in its housing with no seal against dust — one slug of grit unbalances the rotor, scores the housing, and loads the bearings. An air filter that is correctly sized to the blower's airflow and changed on a pressure-drop trigger is the single highest-return maintenance item you have. This guide covers both.

Size the filter to airflow, not to the pipe thread
The mistake is choosing a filter by the port size alone. The filter must pass the full free-air flow of the blower with minimal restriction. Undersize it and you strangle the blower before it even starts work — a permanent pressure loss and a permanent energy penalty.

A YEBL-1-210 displaces 210 m³/hr. A YEBL-FA-1.5 is rated 136 m³/hr — too small; it would choke the blower. The YEBL-FA-2.0 at 298 m³/hr comfortably passes 210 m³/hr with margin, so it is the right choice. Always pick a filter rated at or above the blower's displacement, with headroom, not exactly at it. The pressure-drop replacement trigger
A filter is due for cleaning or replacement based on differential pressure (ΔP) across it, not on a calendar. As dust builds, the filter restricts flow; the pressure drop rises; the blower works harder for less delivered air and draws more current.
The practical method:
- Baseline the clean-filter ΔP when new (measure inlet restriction, or note the blower's normal duty pressure and current).
- Trend it. A rising restriction / falling delivered pressure / rising motor current with no process change all point at the filter.
- Act at the trigger. A common field rule is to service the element when ΔP roughly doubles from clean, or when delivered performance drops noticeably. Dusty environments hit that far sooner than clean ones.

Filtration level: match the environment
Standard blower inlet filters are paper or polyester elements good for general industrial dust. Match the media to the site:
- Clean indoor air: standard element, longer intervals.
- Aquaculture / outdoor: more moisture and organic dust; inspect more often, protect from rain (see monsoon protection).
- Cement, ceramic, foundry: high abrasive dust load; consider a pre-filter or cyclone ahead of the element and shorten intervals hard.
- Food / pharma: filtration and material may need to suit hygiene requirements.
Over-filtering (too fine a media for the dust present) just raises ΔP and steals pressure for no benefit. Match the media to the actual contaminant.
Installation and servicing points
- Mount the intake in clean air. Do not draw from a dusty floor corner or near a discharge. Intake placement is part of good installation.
- Never run without a filter, even briefly. One unfiltered start can pull debris into the impeller and end in an impeller replacement.
- Service, do not just tap. Knocking dust off may restore flow briefly but degrades the media and pushes fines through. Replace the element at the trigger.
- Keep a spare element for each blower so a service is a swap, not a wait. Fold it into spare-parts planning.
Why filter pressure loss is not free
Every filter costs some pressure even when clean — that is the price of filtration. The question is how much, and whether you can afford it. A correctly-sized filter costs a small, predictable drop; an undersized one costs a large, permanent one that never goes away.
Consider a blower with 300 mbar of rated pressure feeding a duty that needs 260 mbar at the process. That leaves 40 mbar of headroom for all system losses — filter, silencer, and pipework combined. Spend 25 mbar of it on an undersized, half-clogged filter and you have almost nothing left for the pipe. The blower now runs at its ceiling continuously, hot and drawing full current, with no margin for the filter to load further before the process starves.

Match media life to your inspection interval
The other half of filter planning is matching how fast the element loads to how often someone actually looks at it. In a cement or ceramic plant the dust load is brutal and the element can reach its trigger in days; in a clean indoor workshop the same element lasts months. Do not set a filter interval by copying another site — set it by trending your ΔP and, if the element loads faster than you can service it, add a pre-filter or cyclone ahead of it to take the coarse dust. Fold the element into your daily/weekly/monthly checks so it is inspected on the weekly walk, not discovered clogged during a low-pressure call.
