DTYWhere an extruder needs vacuum
An extruder uses vacuum at two stations. At the barrel vent it devolatilises the melt — pulling moisture, monomer and trapped gases out through a vent port so the product is void-free, which is a wet, vapour-laden vacuum job. Downstream on pipe and profile lines, the vacuum sizing (calibration) tank holds a steady vacuum that pulls the hot extrudate against the calibrator to set its dimensions, a continuous, forgiving flow duty. The venting service in particular carries volatiles and condensate that would foul a dry oil pump, so a liquid-ring pump — whose water seal handles the wet, condensable load — is the robust choice; a dry oil-free pump suits clean sizing-tank duty and vents that must stay contamination-free.

- What vacuum pump is used on an extruder vent?
- Barrel venting pulls moisture, monomer and gases out of the melt, so the pump sees a wet, condensable load. A liquid-ring pump (YELV) with a separator handles that carryover reliably, where a dry or oil pump would foul. Size it on the volatile load at the vent port and your line rate.
- Is the vacuum sizing tank the same duty as the barrel vent?
- No — the sizing tank is a clean, steady vacuum that holds the extrudate against the calibrator, so a dry oil-free pump (YBDVP) suits it well. The barrel vent is wet and condensable and wants a liquid-ring pump. Keep them on separate pumps so neither compromises the other.
