Dry vs Oil-Lubricated Vacuum Pumps

Choose a dry vacuum pump when the process cannot tolerate oil in the airstream or you want to eliminate oil changes — pharma, food, clean handling. Choose an oil-lubricated pump when you need the deepest vacuum, the quietest running, and the lowest purchase price, and a trace of oil mist is acceptable. That one sentence covers 90% of the decision; the rest of this page is the reasoning so you can defend the choice.

What the oil actually does

The difference between the two families comes down to one component: the sealing film. In an oil-sealed rotary vane pump, a metered film of oil sits between the vane tips and the stator bore. It seals the pumping pockets, lubricates the sliding vanes, and carries away compression heat. (The mechanics are covered in how a rotary vane pump works.)

A dry pump does the same job without liquid. It relies on tight machined clearances and self-lubricating vanes — carbon-graphite or composite — that wear a little each cycle in exchange for needing no oil. Nothing wet touches the pumped gas.

That single design choice cascades into every practical difference below.

Ultimate vacuum

The liquid seal wins on depth. An oil film closes the vane-tip gap better than any dry clearance, so oil pumps reach a deeper ultimate vacuum. Our single-stage ACME pumps reach 750 mmHg, and the two-stage DSVP pumps go far deeper — down to ≤6×10⁻² Pa for lab and drying work.

Dry pumps are not far behind for industrial handling: the YBDVP dry series holds −850 mbar (about 163 mbar absolute), which is comfortably deep enough for packaging, conveying, gripping and clamping. For those duties the extra depth of an oil pump is capacity you would pay for and never use.

Contamination — the argument that ends the debate

For pharma, food, medical and electronics work, contamination is not a tuning parameter — it is a pass/fail. An oil-sealed pump can carry a fine oil mist back through the exhaust and, under some conditions, migrate oil vapour toward the inlet. In a regulated clean process that is an unacceptable risk you cannot fully audit away.

A dry pump removes the question entirely: there is no oil to migrate. This is why the oil-free YBDVP series is the default for pharma applications and hygienic food lines — see the pharma and medical applications page — regardless of the small price and vacuum-depth penalties.

Service cost over the pump's life

Oil pumps are cheaper to buy and more expensive to keep. You commit to oil changes — draining, refilling, disposing of used oil on a schedule set by duty and vapour load (see the oil change guide). That is routine, not onerous, but it is a recurring cost and a recurring chance to get it wrong.

Dry pumps have no oil line item. Their consumable is the vane set, checked and replaced on an interval (see vane inspection). Fewer consumables, no waste-oil handling — which for a plant running many pumps is a real operating saving that offsets the higher sticker price.

A decision path that actually works

Answer these in order and the family picks itself:

  1. Can the airstream tolerate any oil? No → dry (YBDVP or, if you also need pressure, YBVP). Yes → continue.
  2. Do you need very deep / fine vacuum (drying, freeze-drying, lab)? Yes → two-stage oil (DSVP). No → continue.
  3. Is purchase price the tight constraint and the duty tolerant of oil? Yes → single-stage oil (ACME). Otherwise, weigh dry for the lower running cost.

Where each family lands

Noise, footprint and installation

The two families feel different in the plant room, and it is worth knowing before you install.

  • Noise. Oil-sealed pumps tend to run a little quieter — the oil damps the mechanical contact and the discharge pulse. Our ACME pumps sit around 64–78 dB depending on size, and the belt-driven YELV units are similarly restrained. Dry pumps run a touch louder for the same duty because there is no oil to cushion the vanes. Neither is loud, but if the pump sits near an operator station the difference is noticeable.
  • Ventilation and heat. Dry pumps reject more of their heat to the air because there is no oil circuit carrying it away, so they want free airflow around the body. Oil pumps shed heat into the oil and the casing; both still need a ventilated spot, not a sealed cupboard.
  • Orientation and oil level. Oil pumps must sit level so the sight-glass reading is true and the sump feeds correctly — a pump on a tilt reads the wrong level and can starve or over-feed. Dry pumps have no such constraint, which makes them easier to mount on a moving or skid-mounted machine.
  • Exhaust handling. An oil pump's exhaust can carry a fine oil mist; in an enclosed room you may want a mist eliminator on the outlet. A dry pump's exhaust is oil-free, so it simply vents.

None of these decides the family on its own, but on a tight plant layout or a machine-mounted install they tip the balance — and they explain why dry pumps show up so often on OEM skids.

Common mistakes

  • Buying oil to save money on a food line. The purchase saving is real; the contamination liability is bigger. Match the pump to the product, not the invoice.
  • Buying dry for deep vacuum. If you genuinely need fine vacuum, a dry pump will run flat-out near its ultimate and disappoint. That is oil-pump territory.
  • Ignoring running cost. On a fleet, the oil-change and waste-handling labour on oil pumps can outweigh the price gap versus dry over a few years. Cost the whole life, not the box.

Bottom line

There is no universally "better" pump — there is a right pump for your contamination tolerance, vacuum depth and cost profile. Oil-sealed (ACME, DSVP) gives you depth and low purchase price at the cost of oil changes and mist risk. Dry (YBDVP, YBVP) gives you a clean airstream and near-zero routine maintenance at a higher purchase price and slightly less depth.
