Dissolved Oxygen Management with Blowers

Dissolved oxygen (DO) is the number that decides whether a crop lives, and the blower is the tool you use to defend it. Good DO management means sizing aeration for the pre-dawn low at peak biomass, holding species-correct targets, and — on larger farms — staging blowers on a DO controller so you run one machine off-peak and both at the nightly minimum. Know your targets

DO demand is species-specific, and the working target is what you hold at night, not the daytime peak:

The daily oxygen curve

DO is not steady through the day. Photosynthesis pushes it up in daylight; at night algae and stock respire and it falls, bottoming out just before dawn. Warmer water holds less oxygen, so summer nights are the worst case.

Size the blower to defend the pre-dawn low at peak biomass and every other hour is covered. Sizing to the average — a classic error in aeration mistakes that kill shrimp — leaves the pond exposed exactly when it is most vulnerable.

Demand rises with biomass

Oxygen consumption scales with standing biomass and feed rate, both of which climb toward harvest. A blower comfortable at stocking can be marginal in the final month. Two consequences:

  • Size for peak biomass, not stocking-day load.
  • Keep reserve capacity so you can add air as feed rates rise.

As a field cross-check, intensive and biofloc systems commonly run ~1.0–1.5 m³/hr of air per m³ of water, or ~6–10 W/m³ installed aeration power (typical industry guidance). The pond DO meter has the final word.

Staging blowers on a DO controller

On a multi-tank farm you rarely need full air all day. A DO controller lets you run a lead blower continuously and bring a second on automatically when DO falls toward the target — typically at night. This does three things:

  • Saves energy — you are not running full aeration during the daytime oxygen surplus.
  • Protects the animals — the standby is already wired to start the moment DO dips.
  • Extends machine life — the lead unit shares hours with the lag unit.

A worked staging example

A 300 m³ biofloc farm needs ~380 m³/hr at the night peak. Instead of one oversized machine, run two YEBL-1-210 units (2 HP, 210 m³/hr each): one holds daytime DO, both cut in at the pre-dawn low. This also builds redundancy — if one fails, the other still supplies half the demand while you respond. Measuring DO properly

A DO strategy is only as good as the readings behind it:

  • Measure at the pre-dawn low, near the pond bottom where DO is weakest — a surface daytime reading flatters the pond.
  • Track the trend across nights. A minimum that falls faster each night warns of rising demand before a crash.
  • Calibrate the meter. A drifting probe gives false comfort; check it against a known standard regularly.
  • Alarm the low. An audible or SMS low-DO alarm is the difference between a controlled response and a morning of dead stock.

Temperature and DO saturation

Warmer water simply cannot hold as much oxygen — saturation falls as temperature rises. In an Indian summer that means the pond starts each night with less dissolved oxygen in reserve and burns through it faster because metabolism is higher. The practical rule: design and size for the hottest night at peak biomass, keep airflow headroom, and never assume a system that coped in winter will cope in May. This ties directly to the air-density point — hot air is thinner, so the blower delivers slightly less oxygen mass exactly when the pond needs most.
