DTYWhat a CNC router asks of the vacuum
A CNC router table is a leak, by design. The spoilboard is porous MDF and the workpiece rarely covers the whole bed, so the vacuum source has to move a large, continuous volume of air to hold a modest depression under the part while air bleeds through the board everywhere else. That makes this a high-flow, moderate-vacuum job — the opposite of a sealed chamber. A regenerative side-channel blower is the right machine here: it pulls −350 to −550 mbar while passing hundreds of m³/hr, runs oil-free so it never mists the wood, and has a single rotating impeller with nothing to service. Where the shop clamps non-porous sheet on gasketed pods or a zoned aluminium bed, the leak collapses and a dry claw-style vacuum pump holds a deeper vacuum on far less flow.

SZESizing note
Size on bed area and spoilboard porosity, not on the part. As a rule of thumb allow the blower to swallow the full open-bed leakage and still hold −400 mbar under the workpiece; a vacuum-relief valve then caps the depression so light parts are not crushed. Two smaller units on zoned manifolds often beat one large machine.

- What size vacuum pump do I need for a 4x8 CNC router table?
- For a full 4×8 ft porous-MDF bed, plan around the open-bed leakage rather than the part: a 7.5–12.5 HP single-stage regenerative blower (YEBL-1-700 to YEBL-1-1050) typically holds parts flat while passing the air that bleeds through the board. Zone the bed with valves and add a relief valve so you can concentrate vacuum where the workpiece sits.
- Do I need an oil vacuum pump or oil-free for a CNC router?
- Oil-free. A regenerative blower or a dry claw pump keeps oil mist away from the wood and dust out of your workshop air, and there is no oil to change on 24/7 duty. Oil-sealed pumps are only worth it for sealed, non-porous fixturing where you need a very deep vacuum — and even then a dry YBDVP is usually the cleaner choice.
