Labeling and filling machines lean on vacuum for the small, fast jobs that keep a packaging line running: gripping a label off the stack, holding a bottle or pouch steady, lifting caps and inserts, and steadying product during fill. Almost all of it is low vacuum at meaningful airflow — a grip-and-hold duty, not a deep- vacuum duty — which is why a regenerative blower in vacuum mode is so often the right machine. This guide explains the duty and how to choose.
What labeling and filling vacuum actually does
Break the line into its vacuum tasks:

Notice the pattern: low vacuum, but with real airflow because vacuum pads and grippers are never perfectly sealed — a label pad covers only part of its face, a cap gripper leaks around the edge. The machine has to keep vacuum up despite that constant bleed. That is a flow requirement, and it is why an oversized deep-vacuum pump often underperforms here: it reaches a high vacuum against a sealed port but sags when real leaky pads open.
The right machine for the duty
For most labeling and filling vacuum, a Single Stage Turbine Blower in vacuum mode is the natural fit — moderate vacuum with the airflow to cover leaky grippers. Sizing the vacuum
- Count the grippers and estimate leakage. Every open pad and every partly covered face bleeds air. Size airflow to hold vacuum with all of them working.
- Set the vacuum level modestly. You need enough differential to grip and hold, not deep vacuum. Over-specifying vacuum wastes energy and heat.
- Use a reservoir for pulsed grip. Fast label pickup pulses the vacuum; a small vacuum reservoir smooths demand so the machine holds level through the cycle.
- Keep runs short and tight. Long, leaky vacuum lines waste the flow the grippers needed.
Practical notes
- Vacuum mode runs warm. A blower on suction heats up — give it cooling air and do not enclose it.
- Filter the intake. Label dust, glue mist and product fines pulled through grippers reach the impeller; fit and maintain an inlet filter.
- Oil-free near product. Any vacuum whose path can reach open food or pharma product must be oil-free.
- One machine, many tasks. A single blower can serve label pickup, hold and cap handling through a manifold — just size for the total leaky-open airflow.

Why leaky grippers change the machine choice
The reason a packaging engineer reaches for a blower rather than a small vacuum pump comes down to how vacuum grippers behave. A label pad covers only part of its face; a cap gripper seals imperfectly; a hold-down foot leaks around its edge. Every one of those is a continuous air leak while the machine runs. A low-flow deep-vacuum pump reaches a high vacuum against a sealed test port but sags the instant real grippers open — the hold weakens exactly when the machine cycles. A regenerative blower rated for flow holds a steady, modest vacuum through all that leakage.
So the selection rule is: for leaky grip-and-hold duty, size airflow first and vacuum level second.

A worked example: a rotary labeler
Take a rotary labeler with a vacuum drum picking labels off a magazine at speed, plus a few hold-down feet indexing bottles:
- Airflow. Estimate the combined leak of the drum pads and hold-down feet with all of them working, and size to hold vacuum at that total.
- Vacuum level. Modest — enough to grip the label crisply and hold the bottle.
- Reservoir. Add a small vacuum reservoir so fast label pickup does not pulse the level down.
- Model. A YEBL-1-270 (3.0 HP) covers a busy labeler; a compact YELVD-300 suits a well-sealed low-flow machine.
Frequently asked questions
My labels slip at high speed — more vacuum? Usually more flow, not more vacuum. Fast pickup with leaky pads is a flow-limited condition; a flow-rated blower and a small reservoir fix it.
