Every unit, mode and acronym you meet on a blower datasheet or an export RFQ — defined precisely, and linked to the products and pages where it matters.

A

016 terms

Absolute pressure
Pressure measured relative to a perfect vacuum (zero), not to local atmosphere. Absolute = gauge + atmospheric (~1013 mbar at sea level). Vacuum performance is always quoted in absolute terms: an ultimate vacuum of 150 mbar abs means 150 mbar above zero, not below atmosphere. Use absolute pressure whenever you compare vacuum pumps or feed figures into gas-law sizing. See: Sizing tools.
Aeration
Injecting air into water to raise dissolved oxygen for biological treatment or aquaculture. A blower feeds a header that splits to submerged diffusers; oxygen transferred depends on airflow, diffuser type and tank depth. Sizing starts from the oxygen demand in kg O₂/hr, not the airflow — the airflow is simply what delivers it. See: Aeration applications.
Air filter assembly
The intake filter that protects a blower's tight impeller-to-channel clearance from dust and grit. It comprises a housing, a paper or polyester element, and often a sound-damping chamber. A clogged element starves the inlet, drops flow and raises motor current, so it is the first item on any maintenance schedule. See: Maintenance FAQ.
Air knife
A slotted plenum that turns blower airflow into a thin, high-velocity sheet of air for drying, cleaning or blow-off on a conveyor line. Fed by a regenerative or centrifugal blower rather than compressed air, it moves large volumes at low pressure, cutting energy cost sharply versus a compressed-air nozzle. See: Applications.
Ambient temperature
The temperature of the air surrounding a blower and its motor. Side channel blowers are typically rated for intake and ambient up to about 40 °C; above that, air density falls, motor cooling suffers and continuous-duty output must be derated. Datasheet performance assumes standard ambient, so hot plant rooms need a margin. See: Technical FAQ.
Anemometer
An instrument that measures air velocity, from which volumetric flow is calculated once the duct area is known. Vane, hot-wire and pitot types are common. On a blower installation an anemometer verifies delivered airflow at a duct or diffuser, cross-checking the blower curve against real installed conditions. See: Sizing tools.

Bar
A metric pressure unit; 1 bar = 100,000 Pa ≈ atmospheric pressure. Blower pressure is usually quoted in millibar (mbar), one-thousandth of a bar, because side channel machines work in the tens-to-hundreds-of-mbar band. Remember 1 bar = 1000 mbar when converting a compressor spec to a blower one. See: mbar.
Bearing
The rolling element that supports the blower shaft and locates the impeller. Bearing life sets the real service life of a regenerative blower; it is shortened by imbalance, over-temperature, contamination and running against a blocked port. Sealed, greased-for-life bearings are standard; heavy continuous duty may specify a defined re-greasing interval. See: Maintenance FAQ.
Biofloc
An intensive aquaculture method that grows a suspended community of microbes (“floc”) to recycle waste and supplement feed. It depends on continuous, reliable aeration and mixing to keep the floc in suspension and oxygen up; a blower failure collapses the system quickly, so duty/standby air is the norm. BOD
Biochemical Oxygen Demand — the oxygen (mg/L) that microbes consume breaking down organic matter in water, measured over five days at 20 °C. It quantifies the organic load an effluent plant must treat and is the starting point for sizing aeration airflow: more BOD means more oxygen, means more blower. See: Effluent treatment.

Cavitation
In a liquid pump, vapour bubbles forming and collapsing when local pressure drops below the liquid's vapour pressure, causing noise, vibration and impeller erosion. In liquid-ring vacuum pumps the same effect appears near ultimate vacuum, when the sealing liquid begins to boil; it limits how deep the pump can safely pull. See: High vacuum pump.
CFM
Cubic feet per minute — an imperial volumetric flow rate for air; 1 CFM ≈ 1.699 m³/hr. Indian blower catalogues usually quote m³/hr, while US and legacy specs quote CFM. Always confirm whether a CFM figure is free air (SCFM) or at operating conditions (ACFM) before you size a machine. See: Unit converter.
Centrifugal blower
A machine that accelerates air outward through a bladed impeller, converting velocity to pressure in a volute casing. It moves large volumes at low-to-moderate pressure and runs quieter and smoother than positive-displacement types. Yash CX-series and 919-series machines are centrifugal, suited to high-flow ventilation and process duty. See: CX-series blower.
CIF
Cost, Insurance and Freight — an Incoterm where the seller pays freight and marine insurance to the named destination port, though risk passes to the buyer once the goods are loaded at origin. A CIF quote bundles the machine, sea freight and insurance to, say, Mombasa or Jebel Ali. See: Shipping & export policy.

dB(A)
A-weighted decibels — sound pressure level filtered to approximate human hearing. Blower noise is quoted in dB(A) at a stated distance, often 1 m. The scale is logarithmic: +3 dB(A) is double the sound power and +10 dB(A) is perceived as roughly twice as loud. A silencer or enclosure buys 5–15 dB(A). See: Silencer.
Dead-heading
Running a blower against a fully closed valve or blocked port, so no air flows. The trapped air recirculates, heats rapidly and can overheat the machine and motor. Regenerative blowers tolerate brief dead-heading better than positive-displacement types, but a pressure-relief valve should always cap the pressure. See: Pressure relief valve.
Diffuser
The submerged device that breaks blower air into bubbles in an aeration tank. Fine-bubble membrane discs and tubes give high oxygen-transfer efficiency; coarse-bubble units give more mixing and resist clogging. Diffuser type, depth and density set the back-pressure the blower must overcome, so they belong in the sizing calculation. See: Aeration applications.
Die-cast aluminium
A casting process that forces molten aluminium into a steel die under pressure, giving dense, dimensionally stable parts with a fine finish. Yash housings and impellers are pressure die-cast so impeller-to-channel clearances stay tight and the machine stays light and corrosion-resistant — an advantage in humid aquaculture and effluent duty. Dissolved oxygen
The oxygen (mg/L, or % saturation) actually dissolved in water and available to fish or aerobic microbes. Aeration exists to hold DO above a target — typically 4–6 mg/L in treatment, higher in intensive aquaculture. Falling DO is the first warning of an undersized or failing blower. See: Applications.
Double stage
A turbine (side channel) blower with two impellers in series, so the discharge of the first feeds the second, roughly doubling the pressure or vacuum for a given flow versus single stage. Chosen when the duty point needs more pressure than one stage can deliver at the required airflow. See: Double-stage blower.
Duty cycle
The proportion of time a machine is designed to run. S1 continuous duty means 24/7 operation without exceeding temperature limits, as opposed to intermittent ratings. Blowers for aeration or conveying are specified for continuous duty; confirm the duty class matches the application, because a unit rated for short runs will overheat if left running. Duty/standby
An installation with two blowers where one runs (duty) and one waits (standby), often auto-switching on failure or alternating to share running hours. Standard wherever air is critical — aquaculture, effluent, biofloc — because loss of air quickly becomes loss of stock or process. See: Applications.
Dynamic balancing
Spinning an impeller on a balancing machine and removing metal until residual imbalance is within tolerance, so the rotor runs without vibration. It is what lets a blower run continuously without chewing through bearings or shaking itself loose. Every Yash impeller is dynamically balanced before it meets a housing. EXW
Ex Works — the Incoterm where the buyer takes the goods at the seller's factory gate in Faridabad and arranges everything after: inland transport, export clearance, freight and insurance. It is the seller's minimum obligation and the base on which most Yash prices are quoted unless stated otherwise. See: Incoterms offered.

FOB
Free On Board — an Incoterm where the seller delivers the goods, cleared for export, onto the vessel at the named port of loading such as Nhava Sheva; cost and risk pass to the buyer once the goods are on board. Common for sea-freight orders where the buyer's forwarder controls the ocean leg. See: Shipping & export policy.
Free air delivery (FAD)
The actual volume of air a blower delivers, referred back to intake (ambient) conditions rather than compressed conditions. It is the honest flow figure for comparing machines. Make sure two blowers are compared on FAD at the same pressure, not one on FAD and the other on swept volume. See: Sizing tools.

Gauge pressure
Pressure read relative to local atmosphere, as an ordinary gauge shows — zero means atmospheric. Blower discharge pressure is usually stated as gauge, while vacuum is better stated absolute. Absolute = gauge + atmospheric; mixing the two bases is a common and costly sizing error. See: Absolute pressure.

HS code 8414
The Harmonised System customs heading covering “air or vacuum pumps, air or other gas compressors and fans.” Industrial blowers and vacuum pumps classify under 8414, with sub-headings for the specific type. The correct HS code drives duty rates and paperwork in the importing country, so declare it accurately. See: Export documents.
High vacuum
Loosely, deeper vacuum than a single-stage side channel unit reaches — into the low-mbar or sub-mbar range, needing rotary-vane or multi-stage pumps. Precisely, vacuum is named in bands (rough, medium, high, ultra-high); in process industry “high vacuum” often just means “as deep as this pump goes.” See: High vacuum pump.

Impeller
The rotating bladed disc that does the work in a blower. In a side channel machine, radial fins fling air outward and the regenerative side channel returns it repeatedly, building pressure per revolution. Its diameter, fin count and balance define the performance curve, so impeller quality is effectively the whole machine. See: Turbine blower impeller.
Incoterms
The ICC's standard three-letter trade terms (EXW, FOB, CIF, DAP and others) that fix, at each point in transit, who pays and who bears risk. Every export quote should name one Incoterm and a place — “FOB Nhava Sheva,” “CIF Jebel Ali” — so buyer and seller read the price the same way. See: Incoterms offered.
IP rating
Ingress Protection — a two-digit code (e.g. IP55) rating an enclosure against solids and water. The first digit rates dust, the second water; higher is more sealed. Blower motors for wet or outdoor duty specify a suitable IP class so moisture and dust stay out of the windings. See: Technical FAQ.

Manometer
A pressure gauge, classically a U-tube of liquid, used to read blower pressure or vacuum directly at a port. A water- or mercury-filled column reads in mmWC or mmHg; modern digital manometers read mbar. It is the basic instrument for checking a blower against its duty point on site. See: Sizing tools.
mbar
Millibar — the working pressure unit for side channel blowers. 1 mbar = 100 Pa; 1000 mbar = 1 bar ≈ atmospheric. A single-stage turbine blower might make 200–300 mbar of pressure or vacuum; a double-stage machine roughly twice that. Quote blower duty in mbar to compare like with like. See: Static pressure.
MBBR
Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor — a wastewater process where plastic carriers float in an aerated tank, growing the biofilm that digests the load; the blower both supplies oxygen and keeps the media moving. Airflow must be enough to fluidise the carriers, so aeration sizing considers mixing as well as oxygen. See: Effluent treatment.
m³/hr
Cubic metres per hour — the metric volumetric flow rate used across Yash catalogues. 1 m³/hr ≈ 0.589 CFM and 1 CFM ≈ 1.699 m³/hr. It measures the volume of air moved, distinct from the pressure it is moved against; a blower is always specified by a flow and a pressure together. See: Unit converter.
mmHg
Millimetres of mercury — a vacuum/pressure unit equal to the height of a mercury column the pressure supports. 1 mmHg = 1 Torr ≈ 1.333 mbar, and 760 mmHg = 1 atmosphere. Rotary-vane vacuum specs often quote ultimate vacuum in mmHg or Torr, so keep the conversion handy. See: Torr.

Non-return valve (check valve)
A one-way valve that stops air or water flowing back into a stopped blower. It is vital in aeration, where tank water would otherwise siphon back through the diffusers into the machine, and in duty/standby manifolds, where it keeps the idle unit from being back-driven by the running one. NPT/BSP threads
Two pipe-thread standards found on blower ports and fittings. NPT (American, tapered) and BSP — in parallel BSPP and tapered BSPT forms — are not interchangeable, as thread angle and pitch differ. Export buyers must confirm which standard the ports use so their pipework and fittings mate cleanly. See: Technical FAQ.
O

Oil-free / dry pump
A vacuum pump or blower that needs no oil in the pumping chamber, so the discharged air stays uncontaminated. Side channel and dry rotary-vane machines are oil-free — preferred for food, pharma, packaging and any process where oil carry-over is unacceptable. Dry means less maintenance, usually at a shallower ultimate vacuum than oil-sealed. See: High vacuum pump.

Positive displacement blower
A machine that traps a fixed volume of air and pushes it to the outlet each cycle (Roots, rotary-vane, side channel), giving flow that stays roughly constant as pressure rises — unlike a centrifugal, whose flow falls off as pressure climbs. Chosen where steady flow at higher pressure is needed. See: Product families.
Pressure relief valve
A spring- or weight-loaded valve set to open at a safe maximum pressure (or vacuum), bleeding air to protect the blower and motor from over-pressure and dead-heading. It is a required safety fitting on regenerative blowers, sized to pass the full blower flow at its set point. See: Dead-heading.

RAS
Recirculating Aquaculture System — indoor fish farming that filters and reuses water, cutting consumption and letting stock density rise. It leans hard on continuous aeration and often pure-oxygen dosing; blowers run duty/standby because an oxygen interruption in a dense RAS tank can kill fish within minutes. Regenerative blower
A blower where air is picked up by the impeller and repeatedly re-accelerated through a side channel, gaining energy on each pass — “regenerating” pressure per revolution. The result is far higher pressure or vacuum than a simple fan of the same size, with oil-free, low-pulsation, low-maintenance running. Also called side channel, ring or vortex blower. Ring blower
A common trade name for the regenerative / side channel blower, taken from the ring-shaped side channel cast around the impeller. Ring blower, side channel blower, regenerative blower, turbine blower and vortex blower all describe the same machine family. See: Single-stage blower.
Rotary vane
A positive-displacement design with vanes sliding in a slotted rotor set eccentrically in a cylinder, sweeping air from inlet to outlet. Oil-sealed rotary-vane pumps reach deep vacuum; dry carbon-vane versions run oil-free at more modest vacuum. The vanes are the main wear part and the routine service item. See: High vacuum pump.
Roots blower
A positive-displacement blower using two intermeshing lobed rotors to move air without internal compression. It handles high flow at moderate pressure and is common in large aeration and pneumatic-conveying plants; at small sizes it is noisier and heavier than an equivalent side channel unit. SBR
Sequencing Batch Reactor — a wastewater process that runs fill, aerate, settle and decant as timed phases in a single tank. The blower cycles on during the aeration phase, so it must tolerate frequent starts and deliver the oxygen for the batch load within the aerate window. See: Effluent treatment.
SCFM vs ACFM
Standard versus Actual cubic feet per minute. SCFM refers flow back to a standard reference (temperature, pressure, humidity); ACFM is the real volume at operating conditions. The two diverge at altitude, high temperature or under vacuum, where air is less dense — so always confirm which basis a flow figure uses before sizing. See: Unit converter.
Side channel blower
The regenerative blower named for the ring-shaped channel cast beside the impeller. Air is caught by the rotating fins and repeatedly returned through the side channel, building pressure or vacuum with no oil, little pulsation and a single moving part. It is Yash Blowers' core product family. See: Single-stage blower.
Silencer
An inlet or discharge muffler that absorbs the blower's characteristic high-frequency whine, cutting noise by 5–15 dB(A). Absorptive silencers use packing; reactive types use tuned chambers. Fitted at intake, discharge or both — a badly sized silencer adds back-pressure, so it belongs in the flow calculation. See: dB(A).
Single stage
A turbine (side channel) blower with one impeller, giving the base pressure and vacuum of the family — enough for most aeration, conveying and vacuum-hold duties. Where more pressure is needed at the same flow, a double-stage machine puts two impellers in series. See: Single-stage blower.
SOTE
Standard Oxygen Transfer Efficiency — the percentage of oxygen in the blown air that actually dissolves into water under standard conditions, usually quoted per metre of diffuser submergence. Fine-bubble diffusers give high SOTE. It is the link between the airflow a blower delivers and the oxygen an aeration system truly transfers. See: Aeration applications.
Static pressure
The pressure a blower develops against a restriction, measured independently of the air's velocity. Blower duty is normally stated as a flow at a static pressure or vacuum — for example 100 m³/hr at 200 mbar. It is what the machine must overcome: diffuser depth, filter loss and pipe friction. Surge
An unstable, oscillating flow in a centrifugal blower throttled below its minimum stable flow — air momentarily reverses, causing noise, vibration and possible damage. The fix is to stay to the right of the surge line on the performance curve, using a bleed or recirculation when the process turns down too far. See: CX-series blower.

TEFC motor
Totally Enclosed Fan-Cooled — a motor sealed against dust and splash and cooled by an external shaft-driven fan rather than internal airflow. It is the default for blower duty in dusty, humid or outdoor plants; pair the enclosure with an appropriate IP and insulation class for the environment. See: IP rating.
Torr
A vacuum unit equal to 1 mmHg; 760 Torr = 1 atmosphere ≈ 1013 mbar, so 1 Torr ≈ 1.333 mbar. It is widely used in vacuum-process specifications; convert to mbar to compare a process requirement against blower and pump curves quoted in metric. See: mmHg.
Turbine blower
Yash Blowers' name for the side channel / regenerative blower, from its turbine-like finned impeller. Sold in single- and double-stage versions. See side channel blower for how the regenerative principle builds pressure per revolution. See: Turbine blowers.

Ultimate vacuum
The deepest vacuum a pump can reach against a closed, leak-free system — the point where it can pull no further, quoted in mbar abs, mmHg or Torr. It is a limit, not a working point; real duty sits shallower, at the vacuum where the process still needs a useful flow. See: High vacuum pump.

Vacuum conveying
Moving powders, granules or bulk solids through a pipe by drawing a vacuum at the receiving end, so material is pulled along in the airstream. A side channel or claw vacuum pump provides the flow and vacuum; sizing balances line vacuum, pipe diameter and material throughput. See: Applications.
VFD
Variable Frequency Drive — an inverter that varies motor speed by changing the supply frequency, so a blower can be turned down to match demand instead of throttling. On aeration it cuts energy sharply at part load and holds a DO setpoint; confirm the motor is inverter-duty and respect the minimum cooling speed. See: Sizing tools.
Vortex blower
Another trade name for the regenerative / side channel blower, from the vortex-like recirculation of air through the side channel. It is the same machine as the ring, turbine and side channel blower — the name varies by market and manufacturer, the principle does not. See: Single-stage blower.

50 / 60 Hz
The mains frequency a motor is built for. At 60 Hz a given motor spins about 20% faster than at 50 Hz, so the blower delivers more flow and pressure but draws more power. India, Europe, most of Africa and the Gulf run 50 Hz; North America and parts of the Americas run 60 Hz — always specify the destination frequency and voltage. See: Voltage options FAQ.
