A laser cutter has two air jobs that share a source: hold the sheet or laminate flat against the slat bed so the focus stays true, and pull cut smoke and small offcuts down and away from the optics. Both want high flow at a moderate depression — the bed is a slatted, leaky plane, not a sealed pocket. A regenerative side-channel blower suits it well, giving −300 to −500 mbar while moving the volume needed to keep thin material from lifting as the head crosses it. On acrylic, film and other non-porous stock a dry vacuum pump on a gasketed zone holds the sheet with far less flow. The extraction side stays oil-free so nothing contaminates lenses or the workpiece.

SZESizing note
Split the duty: size the hold-down source on bed leakage at your working depression, and treat heavy fume extraction as a separate high-flow path if the laser cuts thick or gassy material. A relief valve protects the impeller when the bed is fully covered.

- Can one blower do both hold-down and fume extraction on a laser cutter?
- On thin, clean stock a single regenerative blower can hold the sheet and pull light smoke through the same downdraft plenum. Once you cut thick acrylic or gassy laminates, the fume volume outgrows the hold-down duty and you are better off with a dedicated extraction path so the hold-down depression stays stable.
- Why oil-free vacuum for laser cutting?
- Any oil mist in the air path can migrate onto lenses and the cut edge and degrade beam quality. A regenerative blower or a dry YBDVP pump keeps the entire path oil-free, so optics stay clean and there is no oil to service on continuous shifts.
