A milk plant is really three air systems in one building. On the packaging floor, form-fill-seal and pouch machines pull vacuum to seat film and evacuate headspace; that vacuum touches product zones, so it must be oil-free — no oil carry-over, no aerosol near the pack. On the utility side, the effluent treatment plant needs a steady curtain of fine bubbles to keep the aerobic tank alive, which is a low-pressure, high-volume blower duty running non-stop.

The two duties could not be more different in character. Filling-line vacuum is intermittent, hygienic and sensitive to contamination; ETP aeration is continuous, dirty-ambient and judged on kWh per kg of oxygen transferred. Sizing them as one job is the classic mistake — the recommended approach separates them and matches a dedicated machine to each.

Sizing the aeration blower

The ETP blower is the machine that runs every hour, so it is the one to size hardest. Start from the diffuser submergence and the tank's oxygen demand, add the header and diffuser losses, and pick the single-stage turbine that sits at that duty point without throttling. Oversizing wastes energy continuously; undersizing starves the biology. The recommended practice is to state the design airflow and the depth of water above the diffusers so the blower is matched, not guessed, and to plan a standby unit so a service on the duty machine never risks the tank.

Keeping packaging vacuum clean

On the pack line the failure mode to design against is oil migration, not capacity. An oil-sealed pump can seem fine for months and then carry a fine mist toward the film; a dry pump removes the mechanism entirely. Route the vacuum header so condensate drains away from the machine, size the pump to the peak simultaneous draw across all heads, and keep a spare on the shelf — on a hygienic line a vacuum drop is a line stop. This is why the oil-free YBDVP class, sized to peak draw, is the standard packaging recommendation for large dairies.

Why does dairy packaging vacuum have to be oil-free?

Because the vacuum is drawn from zones next to open product and film. An oil-sealed pump can carry a fine oil mist back through the line; a dry pump removes that risk entirely, which is why the recommended packaging-vacuum class for dairy is the oil-free YBDVP series.

Can one blower handle both filling vacuum and ETP aeration?

It should not. Filling vacuum is clean, intermittent and pressure-sensitive; ETP aeration is continuous, high-volume and low-pressure. The standard recommendation is a dry vacuum pump for the pack line and a separate single-stage turbine blower for the effluent tank.

How is aeration blower efficiency judged?

On energy per unit of oxygen transferred — effectively kWh per kg of O₂ — since the machine runs continuously. A correctly sized single-stage turbine at the right duty point is what keeps that number low over a year of 24/7 running.
