Ring Blower Noise Reduction: A Practical Guide

Ring blower noise has three sources: the blade-pass aerodynamic tone from the impeller, the motor itself, and the rush of air at the inlet and outlet ports. You reduce it by treating each source — inlet and outlet silencers for the port rush, filter-silencers that do double duty, vibration isolation for structure-borne noise, and an acoustic enclosure for the whole unit. Start from the published sound level of the model you own, then subtract noise at each source; do not expect one measure to fix everything.

Know your starting number

Every YEBL-1 model has a catalogue sound level, and the range is wide because it tracks size and power. The smallest YEBL-1-25 is rated 53 dB — quieter than a normal conversation. The largest units in the family reach 82 dB. That spread of nearly 30 dB means "a ring blower is loud" is meaningless without a model number: a 0.25 HP unit and a 10 HP unit are different machines acoustically.

Before you buy any silencing, know the published dB of your unit. That is your baseline, and it sets how much treatment is worth fitting.

Sound level by model — the catalogue values

The table lists real YEBL-1 units with their published sound levels, from quietest to loudest. Note that dB does not rise smoothly with power — impeller geometry and flow band matter — so read the actual figure, never assume.

These are the numbers to design around. Every mitigation below works down from the figure in this column — the catalogue value is what the bare machine emits, and treatment reduces it. We do not publish a "dB saved" for each measure, because the reduction depends on your installation; the honest approach is to treat each source and measure the result on site.

Source 1: port air rush — silencers

The loudest broadband component on most units is the air tearing in and out of the inlet and outlet ports. This is where silencers earn their keep:

  • Inlet silencer — an absorptive or reactive muffler on the suction port. On a vacuum duty, where the inlet is the working port, this is often the single most effective measure.
  • Outlet silencer — the matching muffler on the discharge port for pressure duties.
  • Fit both for a machine that runs pressure and vacuum, or whichever port is open to atmosphere.

A silencer sized to the port bore and flow passes the air with minimal back-pressure while breaking up the pressure pulsations that carry the noise. Undersize it and you add restriction — which, on a ring blower, means heat. Size the silencer to the model's flow, not just its port thread.

Source 2: the inlet, doubled up — filter-silencers

Most installations already need an inlet air filter to keep grit out of the running clearance. A filter-silencer combines that filter with an absorptive silencing element, so one component both cleans and quietens the inlet. Match the assembly to your unit's m³/hr; an undersized filter restricts the inlet, adds noise of its own, and heats the blower.

Source 3: structure-borne noise — isolation

Some of what you hear is not airborne at all — it is vibration travelling from the blower feet into the baseplate, floor, and connected pipework, which then radiate it. Treat it mechanically:

  • Anti-vibration mounts (rubber or spring) under the blower feet break the path into the structure.
  • Flexible connectors — bellows or flexible hose — between the blower ports and rigid pipework stop vibration from telegraphing down the pipe run.
  • A rigid, massive baseplate resists being driven into resonance in the first place.

Isolation does nothing for the blade-pass tone in the air, but it can remove a surprising amount of the low-frequency hum that fills a room.

Source 4: the whole machine — enclosure

When silencers and isolation are not enough — a large unit near an occupied space, say — enclose it. An acoustic enclosure lined with absorptive material wraps the whole blower. The one rule that overrides the acoustics: the enclosure must ventilate. A ring blower is cooled by the air it pumps and by airflow over its motor and housing; box it up without cooling airflow and you trade noise for an overheating machine. Design ventilation louvres (themselves acoustically lined) into any enclosure.

Match the effort to the location

Not every install needs the full stack. Scale the treatment to where the machine sits:

  • Quiet or unmanned plant room — the bare catalogue dB may be acceptable. Fit a filter-silencer for the inlet and stop there.
  • Near an occupied workspace — inlet and outlet silencers plus isolation mounts.
  • Noise-sensitive site (food processing halls, pharma and medical suites, offices nearby) — the full stack: filter-silencer, both port silencers, isolation, and a ventilated enclosure.

Pick the model with headroom too: if two units meet your duty, the one with the lower catalogue dB starts you ahead before any treatment. What not to do

  • Do not restrict the ports to quieten them. Choking inlet or outlet reduces noise by starving the machine — and overheats it. Silence the air, do not strangle it.
  • Do not enclose without ventilation. Covered above, and worth repeating.
  • Do not trust a single "quiet" claim over the published dB. The catalogue figure is the honest baseline; treatments reduce it, but only measurement on site tells you by how much.

Bottom line

Ring blower noise is three problems — port rush, motor, and blade-pass tone — plus structure-borne vibration. Treat each: silencers and filter-silencers for the air, isolation for the structure, an enclosure for the lot, and ventilation so none of it cooks the machine. Start from your model's published dB, size every component to the flow, and measure the result.
